Dangote Cement’s Ethiopia plant to be inaugurated next week

Dangote Cement is set to inaugurate its new 2.5 million tpy cement plant in Ethiopia on 4 June 2015. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegne will perform the opening ceremony. This is the latest of the Nigerian company’s greenfield plants to open, following hot on the heels of plants in Senegal, Cameroon, South Africa and Zambia.

The Ethiopian plant was contracted to Sinoma International and has been under construction since March 2012. At 2.5 million tpy, the plant is the largest of its kind in East Africa. Investment in the plant is put at around US$480 million, which is part of the US$5 billion Dangote Cement is investing in new cement plants across Africa, with the aim of 40 million t of cement capacity before the end of 2015.
