Court Drops All Charges Againt Former Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura at Makindye General Court Martial

The Makindye General Court Martial has cleared former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, of all charges brought against him.

Kayihura, who holds the distinction of being Uganda’s longest-serving IGP with a tenure spanning 13 years, was dismissed from his post by President Museveni in March 2018.

Following his dismissal, he was subsequently arrested. Before securing his release on bail, Kayihura was charged with failure to safeguard war materials and of being involved in aiding and abetting the abduction of Rwandese refugees.

Kayihura retreated to a private and subdued life. However, in 2021, he once again gained public attention when the Uganda Law Council granted him approval to practice law.

This afternoon, the former IGP was cleared of all charges.

“I am overjoyed and incredibly thankful to God for this positive outcome,” Kayihura happily said.

Kayihura is among the 11 generals who are slated for retirement from the army, with the official retirement date set for tomorrow.
